Liz : I absolutely love making drawings and illustrations on my iPad, but I always assumed that to create a seamless repeat I would need to use my computer at some point in the process.
Then I discovered the Pixelmator app, which makes it easy to create a repeat pattern from start to finish without using a computer at all! You can either create your repeat elements in Pixelmator or create them in an app like Procreate or Adobe Sketch, then use Pixelmator to build the repeat pattern.
If you want to use my repeat elements to try out this process, you can download them for free here. Click Create to open the image. Swipe from the left of the screen to open the layers panel. Use the drawing tools to draw and color your repeat element. To delete an image, click on the layer, then click Delete. You can draw by hand, or trace an image on a separate layer.
Then make a new transparent layer for your tracing lines. To make it easier to see your tracing lines, click on the image layer, select Format , then reduce the opacity of the image.
Pro tip: If you use the tracing method, just be sure to use photos that you took yourself, or images that are okay for commercial use. When I organize my repeat elements, I try to vary the distance between the border and the drawings. Some drawings will be really close to the edge, while others will be inches away from the edge. This helps hide the repeat seam, and gives the repeat a playful scattered look.
Click Save Image to save it to your Photos on your computer. Swipe from the left to open the layers panel, then duplicate the layer 3 times by clicking on the layer and clicking Duplicate. Unfortunately the most important step, the offsetting, had no information about how to use the guides and try as I might, the guides would never match to zero so my repeat would not line up.
Was I supposed to have all the guides on? Just the centre guides? I wish this had been a video which had included those steps. I regret forking out the money for the programme. In step 7 offsetting the repeat blocks, is there an order to which what tile goes in which quarter of the format? And, do you scale down each tile as it is placed or drag it as it is to 0 and 0? I was happy to try this method. The workflow went smoothly between the apps.
However, in the final step 11 , while using the guides in Pixelmator worked well, for some reason I could not get rid of the join lines between the tiles. It was frustrating to say the least. I also tried not using the guides to lineup the tiles which seemed to work better.
But still, those lines were evident. I turned off the guides but still the lines showed. I wonder if it would be any better on an iPad Pro. I am using an iPad Air 2. Any suggestions? I did it! But one part, one quarter will not match up. I tried several times being careful to be sure the measurements were correct. I was careful to duplicate the exact same image 3 times and not to insert a different version from my photos. The top of the bottom right corner matches, but not the bottom.
